Interview with Dr. Julia Schneider aka Doc J Snyder - Comic Essayist, Economist and former AI Consultant

Julia Schneider Comic Essayist, Economist and Former AI Consultant Interview

As a comic essayist, former AI consultant, and PhD economist, Dr. Julia Schneider, also known as Doc J Snyder, creates comic essays that simplify complex ideas and concepts, particularly in the field of AI, making them accessible to a broad audience.

Why AI could save the planet better than we can, and what would happen if AI developed its own will to survive?

It's great that this former AI consultant breaks down her knowledge for us in this interview and beyond!

What's your job and how does it involve AI?

In my comics, I explore how new technologies such as AI, blockchain or NFTs affect our economy, ethics and everyday life and ask critical questions about the long-term effects of this technology. By also incorporating AI into my creative processes, I aim to stimulate a deeper understanding and broader discussion about these crucial issues.

What's the craziest thing about AI you've heard so far?

To be honest, I've heard a lot of crazy things in the last two years - I feel like I'm in a Harry Potter novel from time to time. Personally, I'm fascinated by the ability of AI systems to support research, for example by predicting the structure of proteins or analysing thousands and thousands of research papers for hypotheses. I have high hopes that we might be able to solve some really big problems in this way, including in the area of sustainability.

Which AI tool do you personally use the most?

Search and recommendation algorithms, LLMs like ChatGPT, image generators like Midjourney, simple everyday tools like Google maps and the like

How much time do you approximately save daily by using AI tools?

I really cannot say. I also use them to procrastinate. :)

What area should AI enthusiasts keep an eye on in the near future?

One particularly important area that AI enthusiasts should look out for in the near future is the link between AI and sustainability. AI has the potential to play a crucial role in combating climate change and promoting sustainable practices. From optimising energy efficiency to developing sustainable materials and precision agriculture, AI technologies can help to use resources more efficiently and minimise environmental impact.

The use of AI to predict environmental changes and support sustainable decision-making is becoming increasingly important. Researching and developing AI solutions that are both environmentally responsible and socially just will not only advance technology, but also help to preserve our world for future generations.

Together with Pauline Cremer and Marcus Voß and the Birds on Mars, we have also created a comic essay that is very close to my heart and that we are currently spreading intensively so that the intersection between AI and sustainability enthusiasts becomes larger: A Pigeon's Tale (more about the comic and the research behind it at pigeonstale.ai).

The Interview

The Best AI presentation tool: Gamma!

Tested and approved by us, as it was able to generate a whole presentation from one single prompt!

Any tips, tricks or hacks regarding the use of AI?

Stay playful, network, also and especially analogue, take care of your data and: don't procrastinate with it too much.

What AI tool should be invented for you?

I'm still dissatisfied with the visualisation of ideas - I totally prefer human art.

Love or hate: Technology smarter than humans aka AGI?

I think we will only achieve true AGI when technology and biology merge. By integrating biological components, an AI could develop its own will to survive based on biological principles. This would be a turning point, making AI not only more intelligent, but also more autonomous and potentially able to pursue its own goals.

Although this offers fascinating possibilities for the further development of AI, it also harbours considerable risks. Such a scenario could mean that AGI develops its own interests that are not necessarily aligned with those of humanity. It is therefore crucial that we develop ethical guidelines and oversight mechanisms now to ensure that any form of advanced AI we create is safe and in line with our fundamental values.

Do you believe AI will bring a bigger technological revolution than the internet?

It is hard to imagine artificial intelligence without the internet, as the two technologies are closely intertwined. The internet has revolutionised data collection and distribution, which forms the basis for advances in AI. In this sense, it's a bit of a chicken and egg problem when you think about which technology is more important.

However, I see the advancement of AI as a kind of media revolution that particularly affects knowledge workers and could have an impact comparable to the industrial revolution. This revolution is transforming how we create, process and distribute knowledge. In the long term, especially if we couple AI with biology, this technology could change our society even more profoundly. Then we are not just talking about a technological revolution, but an evolution of the way we interact and exist as humans.

Who'll make the race for spearheading AI in 10 years? e.G. Microsoft, OpenAI etc.

Is AI more of a chance or a challenge for humanity?

I see artificial intelligence as both an opportunity and a challenge, similar to other technological advances in history. The opportunities offered by AI are impressive - as are the challenges, such as the handling of privacy and data, the security of the technology and the social impact, for example on the labour market. This duality requires careful consideration and regulation to ensure that the development of AI progresses for the benefit of all.

About Julia’s project “A Pigeon’s Tale”

A Pigeon's Tale is a comic essay that merges the concepts of artificial intelligence with sustainability, taking readers on a visually guided exploration of AI’s potential and challenges in environmental contexts. The work creatively engages both experts and newcomers in considering the ethical impacts and practical applications of AI for a sustainable future.
